Default About AussieHost.com

My name is Robert Walker, or better known on the net as Aussie Bob. This was a name given to me by a hosting client back in early 2002, and it stuck. I am the CEO/Founder of AussieHost.com, ABN: 67 346 390 286.

I've been in the hosting business since 2001, and have 2 hosting brands under my belt, with AussieHost.com the third hosting brand.

I started my first hosting company (HTTPme) in 2001, and throughout 2002, 2003 and 2004, built that brand to hosting more than 20,000 domains, for clients from all corners of the globe. In 2004 I sold the company and with the proceeds of the sale, my wife and I purchased a 1/4 acre block with range views, and personally built the family home, all 550m2 of it!

During the build, in 2005, I then established my second hosting brand, Dotable. The Dotable brand currently hosts more than 15,000 domains, from mainly international clients. Dotable was sold to the UK2Group on the 1st October 2008 as part of our lifestyle change and refocus back to the Australian hosting market, with AussieHost.com.

I have a passion for building online brands, and AussieHost.com represents my focus on the local Aussie hosting market, with servers based inside Australia. You could say the AussieHost.com brand represents my coming back home, into the Australian hosting market, as my previous two hosting brands have catered mostly to non Australian hosting clients, with servers located in US datacenters. AussieHost.com is specifically targeted to Australians, with marketing and servers based from within Australia.

AussieHost.com is the only host in Australia (that I know of) whose office is powered 100% by renewable energy. Now while many hosts make the claim to be "green", very few are really green. Most hosts purchase cheap carbon offsets and suddenly this allows them to be a green host. But as Kermit said, "it aint easy being green". Kermit was right. Most of the hosts claiming to be green by purchasing carbon offsets is pure nonsense and just the marketing departments of these hosts going overboard, hitching their wagon to the green wagon.

While most hosts talk the "green" talk, I walk it, daily. I'm a passionate advocate for the use of clean renewable energies. I believe that we are custodians of this planet for the coming generations and need to evolve our energy supply from harmful pollutant fossil based energies over to clean renewable energies.

The AussieHost.com office is powered 100% by clean renewable energy from 4 x 80w solar panels and 1 x 300w wind turbine. With a flick of a switch the AussieHost.com office can go back onto the grid, but it's nice to be off the grid and especially nice when there's power blackouts caused by storms or maintenance. We never lose power to the office.

Ok, that covers the power use of the AussieHost.com office. Now what about the AussieHost.com servers that are located in the GlobalSwitch datacentre in Sydney? Obviously we cannot add solar panels to the GlobalSwitch roof, so we added solar panels to our own roof, and this offsets the carbon emissions and power usage from the servers in the GlobalSwitch datacentre.

I'm 39 years old, and have been married for 16 years to an amazing lady called Wendy, and we have 6 incredible children, from ages 3 to 15. My my, where does the time go? It feels like just yesterday that we brought our first son home from the hospital, and now there's 5 more, and our 15 yr old son is nearly taller than me!! My family gives me the drive to succeed, in wanting to be the strong and caring father who provides well for his family. Since 2001 the hosting business has allowed me to achieve this, and I am grateful.

AussieHost.com is a home based family business, and not some impersonal mega host behind an untouchable corporate facade. You'll find that in the hosting industry, a very large percentage of hosts operate their businesses from home offices. Technology allows us this freedom, and the dream of working from home, online, has very much become a reality. Hosting is one of those businesses where you have to be available for action 24x7, so working from home offices makes perfect sense for us web hosts. I have been working online from my home office since 1998, and it's a great lifestyle where you can balance work and family quite well. Each morning I make my 20 second commute from the bedroom to the office, via the kitchen.

It's so easy to talk the talk, and let's face it, all hosts can talk the talk, but it's another matter to consistently walk the talk, over a long period of time. I have walked that talk, day in, day out, since 2001, serving thousands of satisfied customers over those years.

It was said "do unto others as you would have them do to you". This would be the ethos for AussieHost.com and the basis of how AussieHost.com operates. AussieHost.com customers are treated how I would like to be treated, if I was a customer. I expect honesty and fairness in my dealings, and this is given to AussieHost.com clients. I expect to be communicated with, if there's issues that could effect my sites, so we communicate server issues through the AussieHost.com Announcement forum.

Our philosophy is that hosting should be affordable, but not cheap quality hosting. Our overheads are minimal, and we pass those savings on to our customers, with affordable yet sustainable pricing levels.
