Default Hosting & migration.

Hi Bob,

I have been having a read around Whirlpool, and over your forums. Your dedication and products seem to meet my requirements perfectly.

I currently have a small (~150 members & growing daily) phpbb3 board, that I have been running for a few months. My current host have been terrific, both with support and uptime, but their shared hosting plans are failing to meet the demands of my forums.

I'm interested in your MD-1 package, as that would future proof the site for some time to come, all at a great price. I have a few questions regarding the migration process though, as I'm still fairly new to the whole hosting game.

1. As I understand the migration process is a simple one as I'm currently using cPanel, so it's just a case of doing a full back-up on the current host & restoring it in the cPanel software on your server?

2. What about switching over the domain registrant details, nameservers etc. This is the side of things where I get lost, is this a simple process?, can you organise this from your end?. My domain was registered with my current host.

3. What about propagation, will my forums experience any downtime during the process?. Or can I simply add your nameserver(s) to the domain, without even having to inform my current host of my plans to cancel my service until the propagation is complete?

If there's anything else I should be aware of for this process, please let me know.

All the best,
Michael.

You got it. We'll access your cpanel and FTP over to our server that site's full cpanel backup, where we restore it. This migrates everything over.

You would need to point your domain's nameservers to the nameservers that we provide you, for your domain to resolve from our server. There should be an admin area that you can log into for your domain, and change your domain's nameservers.

For active forums it's a good idea to disable posting, as the migration commences. Then you can enable posting when the forum is propagated over to the new server. The propagation process these days is very fast, so no more than 12 to 24 hours usually.

Sing out if you need anything further here.

Thanks for the prompt reply mate.

Yeah I know where to edit the nameserver details on my hosts page.

What about switching the domain over to you guys also, as I'd rather keep all the billing with the same company?.

Everything else sounds great, I'll organise purchasing a new package with you, and have the migration complete before my next billing date with my current host.

No doubt if I experience any other problems during the process, you guys will be there to hold my hand...

Cheers,
Michael.

You can transfer your domain registration over to our domain branch - AussieHost.com Domains. That's billed separate to the hosting, as we keep domain registrations and hosting separate.

Thanks for all the responses Bob.

I have purchased the MD-1 package, and all the account settings have been promptly e-mailed to me.

I'll begin the migration on Sunday night, and hopefully it will all come along without any dramas.

You mentioned disabling the forums, obviously any active posts during the time of the migration could play havoc with the relocation.

Can I simply put a temporary index.html page up in the public_html directory, advising members & guests of the situation - and once it is complete, restore the original index.html file?

Cheers mate.

Michael.

Most forums have a temporary disabled notice, when you disable the forum. I know VB forum does, so your forum could possibly have a similar feature?

Yeah, phpBB does also. I'll just use that.

Cheers.

No worries.

Sing out when you want us to start your migration for you. This weekend is all good if that works for you.

Thanks Bob, It will probably be Sunday night, as that gives it a few days before my next billing period is due with my current host.

One a side note, I was only billed $12.xx, is that because your billing period starts on the 1st of the month, not the date I signed up?

Yep, all recurring billing takes place on the 1st of each mth, so you were billed the prorate amount when you signed up.
