Question PHP as CGI vs Apache module

Comparing phpinfo on Koala and Wallaby, it seems Koala has php run as CGI and Wallaby as Apache mod. I assumed that they would be set up the same way (not sure why I assumed) but it would seem likely that is why a set of scripts that work on one are not working on the other.
???

You would only have your domains on the one server, and not on both.

I thought CGI was best especially for a shared host...

Yes, Koala and Wallaby are setup different so far as PHP. All future servers (Wombat is being racked this week) will be setup the same as Wallaby, for PHP, as will all future AussieHost.com servers.

Hi Dedide,

Just went through some of this myself as I only just recently migrated here from anther developer type community on US servers.

Anyways, as it turns out, when faced in that situation the way make things work (with PHP anyways) is do this.

Get your favourite code editor (mine is Edit Plus)

open up your inside this .htaccess file

I typed code:

php_flag register_globals on

I also had a php.ini file placed inside each directory (if using phpscripts)
which also had a statement: register_globals on

But onverall, the .htaccess file was the ticket and if you need anyother commands in there just add them accordingly.

Hope that helps and other readers whom someday come across that problem should it present itself.

All the best~!

All my study of PHP has led me to believe that having globals on is a major security problem and should be avoided at all costs. I am noticing that it has been turned on universally for the last few days, and I am wondering why,

This should be "OFF". I'm chasing this up with the admins . . .

It is back to off now. I was interested to learn that the normal methods to control how php behaves at the account level (e.g. directives in .htaccess or local php.ini files) had absolutely no effect on the setting.
Are the servers set up to ignore these methods? I am curious to know why.

Hi,
I am having some issues that seem to be related, specifically PHP scripts on a CGI based server having their output user set to nobody(99), which I cannot edit/delete.
Folders/files(components, modules etc) installed by Joomla have this user set, thus not allowing me to edit the folders/files.
Support is also not being particularly helpful.

Can we have our hosting moved from Koala to an Apache Mod based PHP server?
Will this fix the problems I am having?
And can we run our own modified/override php.ini scripts?

Thanks,
Nigel.
