Default [Completed] Koala server upgrade

I haven't been all that wrapped with Koala's performance of late, so decided to upgrade to a more powerful server with more CPU and more disk space. The new Koala server is a Quad Core XEON X3210 with 2 GB DDR2 ECC RAM and 2 x 160GB SATA Drives mirrored in RAID1.

This migration will be taking place late Saturday night, early Sunday morning, so this is the most off peak time available. Details of which will be posted in this thread. The main server's IP will change, and this will effect those using that IP to log into their WHM or cpanels. But that's the only change. The new IP will be emailed to all clients on Koala. This will be a fast migration as the data is moving from one server to another server, within the same DC.

I'll post updates in this thread as the migration starts late Saturday night . . .

Looking forward to the migration! From a client perspective - what improvements shall we expect? Would it allow more overall clients to occupy accounts on the same systems, or would page loads be quicker? more RAM allowance for accounts? Etc...

Thanks for the update

Rodrigo,

You won't notice much, as the existing Koala server was very snappy indeed. But we have larger drives (2x160GB) on this new server and more CPU, with the Quad Core XEON X3210. The existing Koala server had 73GB drives, and these are just too small, so I decided a complete upgrade was required. Most servers would have a 2 to 3 (ish) year life span, and this upgrade will ensure that.

The next few servers will follow suit with this setup with the Quad Core XEON X3210 and 2x160GB SATA2 (RAID1) drive setups.

Existing Koala CPU setup -

Processor #1 Vendor: GenuineIntel
Processor #1 Name: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.00GHz
Processor #1 speed: 3000.563 MHz
Processor #1 cache size: 1024 KB

Processor #2 Vendor: GenuineIntel
Processor #2 Name: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.00GHz
Processor #2 speed: 3000.563 MHz
Processor #2 cache size: 1024 KB

New upgraded Koala CPU setup -

Processor #1 Vendor: GenuineIntel
Processor #1 Name: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3210 @ 2.13GHz
Processor #1 speed: 2133.584 MHz
Processor #1 cache size: 4096 KB

Processor #2 Vendor: GenuineIntel
Processor #2 Name: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3210 @ 2.13GHz
Processor #2 speed: 2133.584 MHz
Processor #2 cache size: 4096 KB

Processor #3 Vendor: GenuineIntel
Processor #3 Name: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3210 @ 2.13GHz
Processor #3 speed: 2133.584 MHz
Processor #3 cache size: 4096 KB

Processor #4 Vendor: GenuineIntel
Processor #4 Name: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3210 @ 2.13GHz
Processor #4 speed: 2133.584 MHz
Processor #4 cache size: 4096 KB

Thrilled to hear that the ETA is still on track. I'm sure your customers will enjoy the speed and reliability of the new server (I know I will).

Hey!!! I fell asleep - needed much needed rest, just like you, I'm usually online till past midnight hehe.

I hope the migration is going well, 5:37pm Western OZ time. On a general note, how long does server migration usually take, and I dont just mean with todays one? No idea on that sort of thing, 10 minutes, 24 hours? etc..

Let us know how its going

Sounds good... I can't wait.

Just a question are the accounts being migrated in alphabetical order, if so could you possibly let me know which you are up to as my account hasn't be done yet

EDIT: Just another question, have you got the new server with the same provider because I see a major routing change for the better from here. Latency has gone down over 5ms compared to the old server (every little bit helps).
